SwimsCool vs Jackrabbit Swim: Built for the UK vs Built for the US

Jackrabbit is one of the world's largest dedicated swim school platforms. But "worldwide" includes a lot of US assumptions — no GoCardless, USD pricing, and no Swim England or STA frameworks. Here's what that means in practice for a UK swim school.

For UK swim schools
SwimsCool.io
From £29/mo — GBP, flat rate
Purpose-built for the UK
For US/international schools
Jackrabbit Swim
From $49/mo USD — scales with students
Feature-rich but US-centric

The short version

Jackrabbit Swim is genuinely impressive software — 7,000+ swim programmes worldwide, deep skill tracking with progression badges, good family account management, and a mature platform with years of development behind it. If you run a swim school in the US or Canada, it's one of the best options available.

For UK swim schools, there are four problems that don't have easy workarounds: no GoCardless Direct Debit, USD pricing, no Swim England or STA framework built in, and US-based support that hasn't grown up with UK frameworks, safeguarding regulations, or GDPR.

None of these are reasons to dismiss Jackrabbit if you're in North America. But for a UK school with UK families expecting Direct Debit, UK award frameworks, and UK data protection compliance — they're significant friction that a purpose-built UK platform avoids entirely.

The GoCardless problem — why it matters more than it sounds

Direct Debit is the standard recurring payment method in UK swim schools. Parents set it up once; tuition collects automatically each month. GoCardless is the dominant provider for this in the UK — low fees (1% + 20p, capped at £4), high success rates, and parents are familiar with authorising a DD mandate.

Jackrabbit has no GoCardless integration. UK schools using Jackrabbit must collect payments by card (Stripe). That difference has real operational consequences:

GoCardless (SwimsCool)

Direct Debit via GoCardless

1% + 20p per transaction, capped at £4. A £50/month lesson = roughly 70p per payment. Automatic retries on failure. Low dispute rates. Parents rarely need to do anything after initial setup.

Card only (Jackrabbit UK)

Card payments via Stripe

Typically 1.4–2.9% + 30p per transaction. A £50/month lesson = £1–£1.75 per payment. Higher card decline rates. Parents must update card details when cards expire. More manual follow-up per payment failure.

At 200 pupils paying £50/month: GoCardless fees ≈ £140/month total. Card fees (at 1.5%) ≈ £300/month total. The payment processing difference alone is £160/month (£1,920/year) — more than the cost of SwimsCool's subscription.

Where they really differ

1. GoCardless — the practical impact on a UK school

It's easy to shrug off "no GoCardless" as a minor technical difference. In practice, it reshapes your monthly admin. With Direct Debit, you collect tuition and it just lands. With card payments, cards expire, get lost, get cancelled — and someone at your school has to chase those families. At 100 pupils, that might be 5–10 failed payments a month. At 300 pupils, it's a part-time job.

GoCardless also has much lower failure rates than card payments (typically under 1% vs 3–5% for cards). Fewer failures means less chasing, fewer awkward conversations, and better cash flow predictability.

2. Swim England and STA frameworks

Jackrabbit has a configurable skill tracking system — you can manually build award stages if you're willing to spend the time setting them up. But they're not pre-loaded, not maintained by someone who knows the frameworks, and not updated when Swim England revises its levels. You're adapting a US system to a UK context rather than using something built for it.

3. USD pricing and exchange rate exposure

Jackrabbit bills in USD. At the current rate, $49/month is roughly £38 — which sounds comparable. But exchange rates move. Your software cost in pounds can fluctuate month to month without Jackrabbit changing their prices at all. For a subscription you're planning around, GBP pricing is simply cleaner.

4. Support that understands your context

When something goes wrong with your software at 6am before a Saturday morning session, you want support from people who know what Swim England is, what a Level 2 qualification means, and what GDPR requires of children's data. Jackrabbit's US support team is well-reviewed in their domestic market. They're less naturally equipped for UK-specific questions.

5. Where Jackrabbit genuinely wins

Platform maturity is real. 7,000+ programmes means years of edge case handling, a large community of users who've solved problems you haven't hit yet, and a feature depth built up over a long time. SwimsCool is newer. If you value a proven, heavily-tested platform over one purpose-built for your context, that matters.
